Head to head

Bitwarden vs Proton Pass

Both are open source with published Cure53 audits and genuinely usable free tiers — an unusually well-matched pair. Proton Pass encrypts more of the record, including usernames and URLs, and adds email aliases. Bitwarden publishes its exact KDF parameters and lets you choose Argon2id, which Proton does not.

The question that decides it

Do you want maximum metadata encryption, or published, tunable key derivation?

Choose Bitwarden if

you want to see and control the KDF settings, and want the broader platform coverage.

Choose Proton Pass if

you want URLs and usernames encrypted too, and email aliases in the same account.

How Bitwarden works

A cloud-synced vault encrypted locally, which can also be self-hosted. Bitwarden documents the design as end-to-end encrypted and zero-knowledge in a published security white paper.

Key derivation
PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 at 600,000 iterations (default), or Argon2id at 32 MiB / 6 iterations / 4 lanes
If you forget the master password
No recovery — No master-password reset for personal accounts unless Emergency Access was configured in advance. Enterprise admins can perform enrolled account recovery.

How Proton Pass works

A cloud-synced, end-to-end encrypted vault. Unusually thorough in scope: usernames, URLs and notes are encrypted too, not just password fields.

Key derivation
bcrypt over the account password, alongside SRP authentication. The cost factor is not published.
If you forget the master password
Recovery is possible — Handled through the Proton Account: a 12-word recovery phrase, recovery file, recovery email or phone. Email or phone alone resets the password but cannot decrypt older data.
A third option

Both Bitwarden and Proton Pass store your passwords. MoolKey does not.

Bitwarden and Proton Pass differ in how well they protect a stored copy of your passwords. MoolKey answers a different question: it recalculates each password from your private phrase and the site name whenever you need it, so no copy exists to protect. A breach would expose masked account names and integers, not credentials.

That is a real trade, not a free win. There is no autofill, no import of your existing passwords, and no recovery if you forget your phrase — none, by design. your private phrase never reaches the service, so nobody can reset it or reproduce a password derived from it.

Bitwarden vs Proton Pass FAQ

What is the main difference between Bitwarden and Proton Pass?
Bitwarden uses cloud-synced encrypted vault, while Proton Pass uses cloud-synced encrypted vault.
Is Bitwarden or Proton Pass more secure?
Security here is mostly about verifiable design rather than marketing. Bitwarden uses pbkdf2-hmac-sha256 at 600,000 iterations (default), or argon2id at 32 mib / 6 iterations / 4 lanes. Proton Pass uses bcrypt over the account password, alongside srp authentication. the cost factor is not published., which it does not publish in full. Do you want maximum metadata encryption, or published, tunable key derivation?
Can I recover my account if I forget the master password?
Bitwarden: No master-password reset for personal accounts unless Emergency Access was configured in advance. Enterprise admins can perform enrolled account recovery. Proton Pass: Handled through the Proton Account: a 12-word recovery phrase, recovery file, recovery email or phone. Email or phone alone resets the password but cannot decrypt older data.
Does Bitwarden or Proton Pass have a free plan?
Bitwarden: Yes — unlimited items and devices, though emergency Access is premium-only, and free organisation sharing is capped at two users. Proton Pass: Yes — unlimited logins and devices, though the built-in TOTP authenticator, unlimited vaults and unlimited email aliases are paid-only.
Has Bitwarden or Proton Pass ever been breached?
Bitwarden: no authoritative breach report was found during research, which is not the same as a guarantee that none has occurred. Proton Pass: no authoritative breach report was found during research, which is not the same as a guarantee that none has occurred.
